The glass artwork: Mother and child by Claudia Kuyken represents letting go of your child. In this glass artwork, mother and child stand slightly apart, creating an empty space between them (letting go). However, mother “hangs” a bit above her child. The meaning to Claudia is that a mother will never really let go of her child and the mother-child bond will always be there.
Claudia found the inspiration through her own bond with her mother who passed away. For her feeling, their bond will always exist.
The method of making Mother and Child
Mother and child was made by making a mold of both figures and casting it in sand. When casting, glowing hot glass is poured into the mold, creating the beautiful back of the artwork. Subsequently, part of the front of the sculpture is cut off from both figures. So that a flat surface is created at the front. Finally, the front is ground and polished for hours. The artwork stands on a granite stone base which completes the work.
